Malachite’s Big Hole

Welcome !

This Web Page is dedicated to the arts, skills and lore of the Mountain Man and is intended to be a resource for all aspects of life in the mountains and the men who lived there.  The focus of the site is on the American Mountain Man from 1804 to 1840, however, it includes information from the earliest 1600’s to the 1870’s. Whether you are interested in the equipment and gear used by the Mountain Men, the lives and tales of the individuals in their own personal struggles to survive and succeed in the wilderness, aspects of everyday living in the first half of the 19th Century, or in the rise and fall of political and commercial empires related to the fur trade across  North America, there should be something here for you.

And just a caveat here:  I endeavored to present this information as accurately as possible. However, the subject of the mountain men has been filled with myth and fiction, so much so that even thoughtful histories have perpetuated some of these inaccuracies, and in the past I know that I have gotten caught up in some of these. If you should find that I’ve erred in the material I’m presenting I would be pleased to hear from you.
